Dutch, tortoise shell book box, with profuse silver applique mounts on all four sides and top. It has a wonderful applique key escutcheon of typical Baroque proportions. The lock is held in with magnificently decorated rivet heads and a splendid Ducal coronet on top. The sides of the tortoise shell are corrugated for strength. Other silver work inside and around the spine firmly hold the box together. The box is pegged construction. The silver is all riveted as per the period. The lid is on a silver chain. The base has four small rivet like feet to protect the tortoise shell. The box is in beautiful, excellent condition. circa 1710-20. front: 8.25″W, 2.25″H, 5.5″D
